Around the year 2000, design secured a definitive and prominent place in the arts, in education, in the business world, and within government. Building on the traditions of industrial design, product design and graphic design, the field of design expanded to include social design, information design, experience design and interactive design. In 2013, designer Lucas Verwey said: “Everything has become design; design is everywhere; we find ourselves in a design bubble.”
If everything has become design, what exactly is design anymore? Does design need a new focus, a new definition, and maybe also a new mission? During this evening, we will discuss these questions. We will also take stock of how design has developed within Eindhoven following the near-move of the Design Academy Eindhoven to Roermond in 2024. At that time, it became painfully clear that the design ecosystem in Eindhoven is vulnerable. A new organization, Design Development Eindhoven (DDE), has been installed to establish a stronger foundation for design, locally and nationally. Where do we stand two years later? Does Eindhoven have a stronger case now for being the design capital of the Netherlands—and perhaps even of the world? What can this stronger foundation offer Eindhoven-based designers? Are we sufficiently self-critical about our design success? Get your tickets here! |
Anne LigtenbergAnne runs Social Design Bureau AM. The design studio distinguishes itself through an empathic approach and works primarily in the social domain to improve people's well being. Anne also is project manager of DDE. She will update us about the plans that have been developed by DDE to make Eindhoven a true design capital.
Kiki van EijkKiki’s practice is rooted in a deep appreciation for craftsmanship and the expressive potential of materials. Her work spans a wide range of disciplines, including textiles, furniture, lighting, ceramics, and glass, often merging functional design with a strong narrative dimension. Kiki will go into the progress Eindhoven has made for the position of designers.

Pete FungPete Fung is a designer, researcher and educator. His practice explores how design can be used to critically engage with the complexities of our interdependence: the languages we use, the aesthetics we subscribe to, the institutions we inhabit as well as the way in which we relate to them. Pete will wrap up with his personal statements.
Silvio LorussoSilvio Lorusso is an Italian writer, artist and designer based in Lisbon, Portugal. He published Entreprecariat in 2019 and What Design Can’t Do - Essays on Design and Disillusion (Set Margins’) in 2023. Lorusso is an assistant professor at Lusófona University in Lisbon and a tutor in the Information Design department at Design Academy Eindhoven. He holds a PhD in Design Sciences from Iuav University of Venice.

What makes a city a home? As Eindhoven changes at a rapid pace, we are searching for what lies beneath the marketing language. How the city presents itself to the outside world is clear: we are innovative, creative, and global leaders in technology and design. But what makes us truly call Eindhoven our home? And how do we feel at home in a city that is constantly evolving, whether we were born here or moved here?
On Wednesday, June 3, we will gather at the City Hall to collectively build on our sense of home. Under the guidance of ‘supervisor’ Jasja Renne, we will engage in conversation with six fellow city residents. Together, we explore which parts of our home in Eindhoven already stand firmly, where things still creak or shift, and where there is space to strengthen or renew. Language should not be a barrier to having a conversation. With a live translation tool, we ensure that both 'old' and 'new' residents can engage in the conversation in the language they find most comfortable. AI AND DEMOCRACY (ENG) (PAST EVENT)Tuesday 7 October - 20.00
TU/e Eindhoven, Blauwe Zaal Jasper Kars - Julia Janssen - Jorim Theuns
Our democracy —as we know it— is under pressure. Artificial intelligence (AI) is playing an increasingly prominent role in this. Deepfakes of politicians blur the boundaries between fact and fiction. Microtargeting influences voters with tailor-made messages, while automated bots flood the public sphere with streams of disinformation. Filter bubbles trap us in one-sided perspectives, fueling polarization and radicalization.
At the same time, AI also has something to offer democracy— such as opportunities to renew direct democracy. What role can AI play in transparent collaboration between government and citizens? Can AI help foster understanding between people? Can AI act as a unifying force instead of a dividing one? On this evening, we will take you on a journey through the world of AI and democracy: moving from the challenges to the possibilities. This event has already taken place – registration is no longer possible! Couldn't be there? Visit our archive. |
