HELIX - hét nieuwe huis voor dialoog & debat

Open dialoog is urgenter dan ooit.

EERSTVOLGENDE EVENT

AI: THE NEXT ERA
OF CREATION (ENG)

Tuesday 12 May - 20:00
Natlab, Auditorium
Danielle Arets - Sander Veenhof - Marijke Goeting
Across more and more fields, the rise of artificial intelligence is sparking urgent questions and ethical dilemmas — and the cultural sector is no exception. While art once seemed "safe" as perhaps the clearest expression of the human spirit, today’s artists, musicians, designers, and performers find themselves increasingly forced to position themselves in relation to their artificial competitors.

Does a creator still own their work? Can AI simply scrape any available data to start producing its own? Recently, we have seen a surge of controversy surrounding AI in the arts, such as the generated music and videos of Sienna Rose. It raises important questions: Can we truly enjoy a song knowing it was crafted by an algorithm? But also: how do we keep human creativity from being lost in the noise of an infinite stream of generated content?

Who is held responsible when AI-generated culture crosses a line? Take, for example, the Dutch AI-track about immigration, ‘Wij zeggen nee, nee, nee tegen een AZC’. The song was pulled from platforms after widespread backlash, yet the anonymous creator behind the track remained unreachable.

Some makers are embracing collaboration with AI, giving rise to new artistic movements, while others choose to stay as far away as possible. Will AI provoke a new counter-movement among these creators? What does a movement look like when it is driven by the values of authenticity and human error? During this event, we explore the future of creation after the widespread use of AI. Will it mean (co-)creating with AI, or finding power in a process that is completely, and quintessentially, human?
